December 18th, 2024 Healthy Relationships Support Group: How to Communicate with Family During the Holidays

by | Dec 18, 2024 | Our Stories

Happy Holidays from PHA Clubhouse!

As we celebrate this special time of year, we’d like to share a glimpse into one of our recent discussions in the Peer-Led Healthy Relationships Group at PHA Clubhouse.

This your friendly neighborhood member Brekke here and this session, we focused on the topic of communicating with family during the holidays, a challenge many can relate to. Members explored family dynamics and how past behaviors, and childhood memories often resurface during family gatherings. Rather than avoiding these triggers, we discussed the importance of preparing for them. Recognizing how we’ve reacted in the past allows us to consciously choose how to act in the future, empowering us to take control of the one person we can change: ourselves.

We also talked about setting realistic expectations for family gatherings. Members shared strategies like maintaining boundaries around sensitive topics, such as politics or mental health, and redirecting conversations to lighter subjects, like the “controversies of fruitcake” or “shorts during winter.”

Navigating family relationships can also mean addressing potential conflicts. Members suggested ways to foster positive interactions, such as practicing gratitude. Taking a moment to reflect on things you appreciate about someone before seeing them can help create a more harmonious environment. Identifying shared interests and “off-the-table” topics can also make conversations more meaningful.

Ultimately, our group emphasized focusing on what truly matters during the holidays. Here are a few reflective questions we discussed that might help guide your interactions:

  • “Who is this serving?”
  • “Would I rather be right or happy?”
  • “If this were the last time I saw this person, how would I want to leave things?”

At PHA Clubhouse, we strive to create a supportive space where members can explore topics like these to improve their relationships and overall well-being. Our Healthy Relationships Group will continue into the new year, with our next session focusing on Emotional Intelligence.

Whether you’re a current or potential member, we invite you to learn more about the programs and opportunities available at PHA Clubhouse. Together, we can create a community of growth, connection, and support.

Wishing you a joyful holiday season and a happy New Year!
